YMCA Summer Under the Stars

Click to RSVP! – YMCA Summer Under the Stars

Hello Scouts,

Next month is a huge event at the Mays YMCA. This is a great opportunity to showcase Troop 650 and earn some service hours as well. It is called Summer Under the Stars, and it is on July 22nd. It starts at 6:30 pm and we’ll stay until 11:00 pm. During this event, scouts will:

1. Help staff lead activities (flag football, dodgeball, tag, fires for s’mores)
2. Help families unload and setup tents
3. Present scout skills to the kids (knots, camp gadgets, Dutch oven meals)
4. Help keep the bathrooms clean

{We will need one adult and one scout to lead each activity. Let me know if you are willing to do this.}

Camp Skills Training

Greetings Troop 650 – As you heard this evening we will be having a camping skills clinic on Sunday afternoon at the church. We will be meeting around 1:00 pm and work through basic camping skills for a couple of hours. Goal is to wrap up around 3:00 pm.

This clinic is meant to help scout refresh on camping skills before the El Rancho Cima Campout and to help scout fulfill basic requirements for rank advancement for trail to first class.

I. How to setup a camp stove – propane tanks, gas lines, and stove setup

II. How to use the stove – lighting the stove and controlling the burner heat

III. Basic cooking skills – how to boil water, how to use the frypan, how to use a griddle

IV. How to plan for meals; portions control, shopping hints. We will cook a snack or light lunch, food will be provided.

V. KP – How do we cleanup and breakdown our gear.

VI. General camp skills – taking care of trash, cleaning up campsite, miscellaneous items.

Several senior scouts are prepared to help lead the skills training clinic. This is a great opportunity to knock out a few requirements.

Things you will need – scout book, pad of paper, writing utensil (pen or pencil), mess kit.

Please let me know if you will be able to attend. I will see if Mr. Kruse can put up an RSVP on the troop website to get a good headcount the activity.
